Spindle end cap. How much clearance? How tight??????

OK, the spindle is now rebuilt and the time has come to tighten the end cap. Now the rebuild manual says screw all the way in as far as it will go and you may have to back it out a tiny bit to line up the set screw hole. And there should be about .003" clearance left before cap contacts quill. On mine to line up set screw hole I have to back it out about 1/8 turn which is much more than .003" Is this normal? If I screw the cap in snug, I have about .001" clearance on on side and less on the other side of cap (.001" is smallest feeler gauge I have) so it may even be touching quill.

So the question is, does the cap have to be snug up against the bearings or is clearance between the two OK? I am guessing it has to be snug or the preload will not be correct? If it needs to be .003" and snug against bearings, what do you think about me putting cap in the lathe and skimming off .002"?

This is my first time doing a Bridgeport spindle so am clueless as to what it's supposed to be like.:confused:

By the way it's a 2J2 made in 1980.
