Hardinge in the scrap pile

It's a CNC turret don't know if there is anything any of you would need off of it. The turret has some tool holders in it. I had them turn it right side up but didn't take anymore pics, going back today to take a air powered draw bar off a cnc mill that's laying under it.

Original Hardinge Flyers / manuals

Just wanted to post what I found in my grandpas hardinge hc cabinet. Looks like it was taken out of the plastic once before and that's it. Pretty cool, dated 1981 on one of The booklets. I'm sure he has tons more around the shop, but no time to look for it!

Don't we all wish our HC's looked is new ;)

Looking for Hardinge wiring schematic

Gentlemen, can someone please point me to somewhere to find the wiring diagram
for a Hardinge HC lathe?
The wiring diagram is CHG-8220 according to the side panel label.
I have the parts and maintenance manual, oddly enough neither contains the wiring schematic.

Thank You

Minimum height of VMC 1000 / 3020 / 4020 type machines - if the Z motor is removed

Gentlemen,

My garage header is at 81.5", exactly. I need a machine that will fit in under this height, and my preferences are:

Hardinge VMC (don't care as long as the table is at least 30" in X and I have at least 18" in Z)
Yang? (Tiawan Hardinge)
Okuma (e.g. Cadet V4020)

I'm not fond of Haas. I've heard too many stories of these machines wearing out too quickly. Don't want to end up buying a junker. Ironically, Haas is the one machine I *know* will definitely fit under the header with room to spare. Makes me want to cry.

Any other machines you folks know definitively can be dismantled relatively easily to get below the height indicated above?

Varispeed housing is shattered. Series 1 mill.

I purchased this mill a while back as 'rebuilt'. The bearings they used in the belt drive assembly weren't sealed and went bad. The stress caused some severe cracking in the belt housing base. It is unusable.
I'm looking for a replacement housing new or used.
It is a varispeed j head, part # 12180052 (bottom) or both 12180051 and 12180052 (top and bottom).

Any help at all is appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Was cleaning house and found this in an old kennedy....its exactly .625 in diameter and exactly 1" long....the tips of tapers have a flat ground on each end....the center says "Bridgeport ****1 in."

Reminds me of a mic standard but....?

Finally brought my new (old) Bridgeport home!

J-head fine feed disassembly help

$

I am trying to do a basic external teardown on my J-head so I can splash on a bit of paint to match the rest of the machine. In a nutshell, not trying to do unnecessary work as the machine works fine and is quiet as-is. As you hopefully can see in the pics, Ive got it mostly apart. Unfortunately, Im a bit stuck with removing the handwheel clutch (113). Both the setscrew (6) and the screw and spring (116 & 174) opposite were easily removed but the 3/16" ball bearing (173) refuses to come out. Am I wrong to think the ball bearing should simply fall out without the screw and spring holding it in, thus allowing the handwheel clutch (113) to simply pull off?

Any/all help is greatly appreciated!

X axis power feed problem with new unit

I am attempting to install a X power feed unit to replace a 6f unit on a Bp 48" table ----

What I have run into is the ALSGS unit seems to made for a Bp that never had a factory power feed ?

The crossshaft on the table stops short of extending out past the end of the table , and as near as I can tell the ALSGS unit does not come with a extension shaft ?

I am looking under my rebuilt BP unit with a similar power feed and I see a coupler coming off the cross screw and a short shaft to extend out and carry the handle --

My questions are ---- are my assumptions correct so far ? Can I buy this short shaft and coupling from somewhere ??

Thanks for all replies !

Thinking about pulling the trigger on this $1500. DRO for a 1975 2J. no glass scales and it does bolt-hole patterns and such. Looks like a simple install that uses some of the existing threaded factory holes in the saddle.
Any opinions on this unit?

Help, I've just managed to get this machine into my workshop, but it's been left un used for ages, so the battery's went flat. I now need to enter the parameters again. Does anyone have a copy of parameters from similar machine, or can anyone tell me how to work them out?

The machine is a Bridgeport Interact series 1, with TNC 150, any help would be very grateful.

Thanks

Jim

Fine Feed Handwheel won't initially engage quill

$

Hi all:

I just spent an hour searching this forum for a post regarding my problem :toetap:. I can't seem to find an answer that clearly addresses my issue. I thought I'd ask the community for some help please.

I've been doing some work on my Bridgy (series 1 J head varispeed). The machine appears to have been made in the early 80s as the base has no coolant catch basin but is shaped like the later ones that do have a basin.

Here's a somewhat adequate description of what is going on with the downfeed:

This is manual fine downfeed only . . . not auto downfeed.

When I trip the engagement lever and engage the down feed handwheel manually with the quill/spindle in its retracted position, the downfeed will not directly engage. The quill begins to travel (about 1/8") then slips out of engagement with an audible 'click' sound. If I put hand pressure on the engage-feed lever it will work with the quill fully retracted at the start.

However, If I use the quill arm to move the quill downward about an inch on the Z axis, the handwheel will engage and work normally without constant hand pressure on the feed lever. It's almost as if there was a gear that starts the movement and that gear has teeth at the beginning that are a bit worn. AS if they begin to catch but slip out under any pressure.

Like I said, I trolled this forum for a case of this issue but couldn't find an answer. Probably the search terms I was using. No doubt the answer is here somewhere. Sorry if this is a redundant question.:o

Thanks alot gents,

Psient

Problem with 'swishing' noise on my Bridgeport

$

HI All:

I have another issue with my bridgeport (series 1 varispeed 2hp) . . . :scratchchin:

It makes a swishing noise when in low speed. IN high speed it's not so noticeable although it seems to still be there.

I found a video that seems to duplicate the noise but the fix is something I don't understand. That is, the fella that posted the video presumes a level of knowledge that is different than mine so I don't quite get what he's talking about when he explains why what he does works to fix the problem. :dunce:

I've put the 3 videos in this post.

These first two give an example of the kind of noise my machine is making:

#1

Bridgeport Milling Machine - Still Loud - YouTube

#2

Bridgeport Milling Machine - Noise Diagnosing - YouTube

This third video shows the fix:

#3

Bridgeport Milling Machine - (Noise) Problem SOLVED! - YouTube

The noise is pretty much identical to the noise my Bridgy makes. It's a swish swish swish at each revolution most noticeably at low speed; louder than the video it seems.

Can someone explain what he means in the fix video when he talks about why changing the diameter on the pins works?

Or is this not an example of a problem with a vari-speed due to the different pulley arrangement?

Thanks,

Psient

Bridgeport advice needed M

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1918 south bend lathe. I am going to sell it to afforded a beginners mill. I plan on lightly using it and maybe for some precision drilling. I am learning how to machine. I do have a phase converter I built so three phase is not a issue.
I recently found a bridgeport m mill for a good deal. It is listed as complete but the main head housing is broke.
So can you get this part? Is it a good starting mill? Am I crazy? Could I get it and some day upgrade to a better head?

Thanks any advise is appreciated.
