What the heck goes here?

So I picked up a Siries II for a grand, love it, way better than my old J-head. But the back of the ram is unlike any I can find pictures of. It has a provision to mount something. It looks very similar to the front of a series-1 ram, the head knoding end. It isn't the horizontal ring you see a shaper head mounted to. All the other siries-II rams I see are single ended so I'm very curious what it's for? I'll see if I can figure out how to post a picture.

Motor and VFD options for 2J Bridgport clone. Direct drive?

Good afternoon, A good friend of mine gave me a Enco milling machine Bridgeport clone. I striped it down and restored her. It has hard chrome ways with NO visible wear at all. Only .004-.006 backlash on the x and y axis. Absolutely great shape. The only issue with her is the motor shaft is broken. So it needs a motor. My buddy that gave it to me is a machinist and he made an adapter to fit a standard 184TC? face mount motor.

Option a

Source an original Motor and use the variable speed on the head.

Option B

Source a 184Tc Motor and install it with the adapter and extend the shaft to modify it to work with the Variable speed pulley

Option c (what i am leaning toward).

Install a 3-5HP 3 phase motor, Remove all the variable speed drive parts and install a fixed pulley ratio and control the speed with the VFD. Probably using j6 microgroove belts and pulleys.

Has anyone done the above?

Broke of adjustment for tramming in head... now what. 4hp series 2 bridgeport

Need help getting Hardinge HLV Carriage Feed Controller working

$

I bought an early HLV some months ago. It is a 3-phase 240v machine and I have rewired it to operate the main drive and coolant pump using VFDs to convert 240 single phase to the three phase needed for the motors. I've removed to old control system and wired to get spindle forward, reverse, high and low speed operating and I'm now on to getting the carriage feed to work properly.

There was no wiring diagram with the machine and my tracing of the old control system had the carriage feed controller hooked up to a 120v ac transformer. When I apply 120v ac line voltage to the controller, nothing happens.

I could use a wiring diagram and some help troubleshooting the controller and drive motor. The controller panel has on/off, high/low, and left/right switches and a status light around the large speed control knob. The carriage feed motor is 90V dc 1/15hp.

Assistance would be sincerely appreciated.

This might be more of a general forum question, but I recently bought an old Hardinge second op and it came with a pile of these gizmos.
I was wondering if any of you are familiar with these and can direct me to somemore info? Click image for larger version.

Bridgeport - Knee and ballscrew swap??

$
0

So, my current Bridgeport is a 1957 vintage - BR 31769. I have about 8" of Y travel on it. Finally bought a J Head Bridgeport!

I jut picked up another machine + a parts machine. The parts machine (BR 253935) does not include a table or saddle, but there was a Y balllscrew with the knee. The knee on the parts machine is 4" longer than my current one. So, I guess that would give me nearly 12" of Y travel. I suppose I would prefer to keep my current base and ram, is it has the "Bridgeport" cast into it, where the parts machine has the plastic "Bridgeport" signs. And they are broken, and the paint is terrible. So, visually, my current machine is much better looking.

So anyway, is it feasible for me to even try, or would it be a waste of time to try an put my saddle on the "new" knee and switch them?

Thanks.

Oh, the other mill I am keeping is a "Bridgeport by Textron" 12/BR 167006. I wonder what the age of that machine is?

This is the head I will put on it. What replacement head is this?

Bridgeport CNC (Factory, non retrofit?) Knee Mill Qs

$

Hello All,

I am going to see a few items for sale today that are needed in my shop (mainly some steadies that fit my long bed CNC) and the owner of the shop, who is quite old and retiring/downsizing sent me some pictures of this knee mill he is trying to sell. His son is actually handling these sales. I was not planning on getting a CNC knee mill - just a standard Bridgeport, or similar, but now I am somewhat interested as I am comfortable with CNC controls for the most part, and this machine looks great in pictures. Of course, pictures are often misleading regarding condition of machines... but I'm wondering if anyone of you can confirm if this is a Bridgeport OEM CNC or a retrofit. If Bridgeport OEM controls, does anyone have anything good to say about this machine and its controls. I have NOT heard good things in my internet readings regarding Bridgeport control systems IN GENERAL, but I don't want to dismiss this machine because I have read a few threads in the past. Does anyone know the model? I am hoping there is a better nameplate in person - I will find out this evening.

Asking $4500 for the machine - and because I know nothing about the controls the price does not mean much to me yet.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

EDIT:****sorry about the pictures, trying to figure that one out here.

Hydraulic fluid for True-Trace system

I am setting up a 3D True-Trace B360-3D. The original manual calls for Mobil Velocite "S" oil from Socony Mobil. I have contacted the local distributor for Mobil and no one seems to know what "S" means or the viscosity it would be. They say Velocite is classified with numbers for the different viscosity.
Have also seen Velocite is $20+ a gallon!
Is there an alternative that I can use successfully??? What viscosity oil is used?

Anyone here got a good way/bed guarding setup for their HLV-H?
Remove their compound and replace with a solid toolpost mount?

I like Robin Renzetti’s solutions for these things, but I want to see what other solutions people have for them.

Hardinge Carriage Feed Issue

Gentlmen,
I'm having an issue with my beloved Hardinge Narrow bed lathe HLV-BK?
Looks like the carriage motor wires frayed and shorted were they exit the motor. I replaced the guilty wire but still no luck getting any motion. Can somebody direct me what to do? I'm a total klutz with electronics so please spoon feed me the info :-).

Other info:
The motor plate says 115VDC.
The light at the Carriage control box on the right hand side will light up when powered.

Thank you!

Split Bed Turret Parts Diagram Available?

$

Hey guys,

When I bought my 9" cataract it came with a six-position turret, but because I had an original short bed (to only have a cross slide mounted) I never needed or had the ability to use it. I just picked up a 7" cataract, and now I have a longer bed to use the turret on if I swap headstocks. But here's the problem, this turret is missing a lot of parts and all of its internals. It must have been used as a parts unit at one time.

Is there any way I can find a parts diagram, exploded view, or better yet a section view of the turret? I don't care so much about the indexing mechanism, but I'd love to rebuild the automatic turret lock mechanism if it's practical.

Thanks,

Andre

Hardinge HLV rectifier swap

Hi, I'm trying to swap the selenium rectifier on my HLV for a silicon bridge type (just as as a precaution, it's not blown yet). I'm going crazy trying to work out which wires go where! The wires all come from the long terminal block on the left (pic 4) am I right in thinking that the AC 1&4 terminals (green and blue) go to the right hand terminals of the bridge, as pictured and the DC 1&2 go to the left two terminals of the bridge? Sorry if that's unclear, I just want to check before I start cutting wires!

Looking to buy... (1) Hardinge turret lathe --- HELP with what to look for...

$

Hello, to the info crew here on practical machinist.

Like the title says, I am looking at a few different machines to buy and wanted to know what to watch out for
(1) Hardinge Turret Lathe

Good:
it uses and comes with 4C collets
it comes with a few tool holders
it is (from my research on these) a DS59 or DV59 (not sure the model, as to why I am
posting)1946-1960 3 speed belt step pulley

Bad:
it is dirty with grime so difficult to see any mishaps or injuries to surfaces, however turret
revolves and engages into lock position
the pivoting collet closer holder on the end of headstock is broken where it pivots.. ? could
make new?

What do the fellow operators of this machine think about it? And what would you say to me to specifically look at when I return to its location for pick up.

Thanks to all who assist.
J.

Hardinge HLV refurb

Hi, thought I should probably start a bit of a project thread for the HLV I've been working on. Spied it on ebay just after Christmas. The pictures were awful, but after I looked through a few times and spotted the taper attachment I figured I would go for it. One very cold trip to Wales and some mild stress (guy had no idea how to load a lathe) I had it in my van and on the way home. This is getting it unloaded at our workshop:
Picking it up

Initial impressions were good - looked like everything was there and under all the grime even the paint looked ok. It came with lots of other stuff, which took some work to ID but I've now sold most of the extras which made the lathe very cheap. I took everything apart on the cross slide, cleaned and oiled it and reassembled:
Hardinge cross slide

The gearbox was in really good shape (once I figured how to get the cover off!)
Carriage gears

While I was at it I removed the carriage completely to measure the front of the bed for wear. I know it won't tell the whole story but I've read its a good indicator of what condition the lathe is in. It was months ago now and I forgot to write down the exact measurement, but it was very very minor.
Bed measurements

Up until this point I'd not been sure whether to keep it or sell it, but having got this far and with it in such good shape I decided it was a keeper. I didn't want to power it up until I had all the crud and dust cleared out from under the carriage and checked it all over.
