EZ TRAK - Z axis DRO readout really inaccurate

1996 EZ TRAK DX, 2 axis:

Just got the machine in place and wired up and was checking everything out. It's been idle about 8 months since I purchased it.

Here's one issue: When moving the quill and returning to the stop, the Z axis readout doesn't return to it's original (shown) position.
Not only that but each successive time I move the quill away and back to the stop, the readout gains about 0.02. The .02 is not consistent but it's in that range.
Tried re-zeroing, to no avail.

The mount hardware all seems tight.
I've not yet peered behind the rubber seals, for fear of more contamination.

Is it DOA or .......?

thx
