Hardinge BB4 - Vise questions

Working on the resto of the BB4 mentioned in an earlier thread.
The vise has a cracked section at the leadscrew trunion. See photos below

2 questions:

1 - What is the best way to repair this? Silver solder? Braze? JB Weld?

2 - What originally went in the hole below the leadscrew? Right now there is a machine screw holding the two pieces together. Some sort of rotational lock? Sure would like to see a photo of it.
