Hardinge HLV (not HLV-H)

I have a Hardinge HLV that has been a project for a number of years now but is slowly reaching completion.

One of the things I was looking forward to was a very quiet operating lathe (belt drive as opposed to gear) but one thing I have found with my HLV is the Vari speed pulley rattles due to the adjustable part of the pulley frame jumping up and down slightly.

I imagine this is one of the reasons Hardinge changed this setup when they updated the design to the HLV-BK.

To clarify this, my understanding is the HLV has the manual wind up speed control and the HLV-BK (still narrow bed) has the electric speed control adjustment.

Recently while perusing Ebay I see someone has this setup plus the speed control motor.

Has anyone converted the manual speed control to electric speed control and what would be required (apart from the electrics) ie, in what way would the cabinet need altering, does the support bracket for the electric pulley system bolt up into the same location as the manual pulley system?

Does anyone have a HLV-BK they can take some photos and measurements of and email them to me?

I would like a quiet Hardinge HLV. I suppose an alternative would be to use a direct drive from a 5HP motor run on an inverter, I think this is the way that Paul Babin goes when he rebuilds the HLV-H.

Any help would be very much appreciated.................Kiwi
