This might seem like an odd question but, how loud should the head be? I have never owned or run a Bridgeport before so I have nothing to compare it to. I only ran the mill for about a minute when I got it, just to find out if the motor was functional or not.
I have reassembled my 2J head and it seems to be running fine. It is cutting fine and the finish is quite acceptable.
I have 0.0035" runout but considering that the spindle was full of rain water, it isn't bad. With oil in the spindle bearings, the runout improves to around 0.002". I know the bearings need replacing but they will have to do for now.
The motor and housing is warm but not hot. The head doesn't rattle, squeal, or make a grinding noise.
It just seems to have a mechanical "roar", that seems very loud. Not wearing hearing protection is uncomfortable in a very short order. I am running in high range at about mid-way through the speed range.
In neutral, I can spin the spindle by hand. In high or low gear, it is impossible.
Am I being paranoid or should it run quieter?
