Hardinge HC & Omniturn Control Spindle Bearings

Hello,

ISO a bit of guidance on my recent acquisition. It's old, but it's supposed to be in "running" condition...and it was a good price so don't laugh.

She's an old Hardinge HC lathe with the Omni-Turn CNC attachment. When I fired her up for the 1st time and started the spindle, I could hear the motor start but the spindle didn't turn. After a few seconds the spindle began to turn. The spindle lock pin was not engaged (I even pulled it to check it's condition), and given the amount of noise from the headstock, I'm a bit concerned. The spindle is so tight, that the motor will spin it, but I can't spin it by hand.

Am I looking at a new set of spindle bearings, or is there anything else that might cause this? Thanks!
