Hi
I have purchased a very nice Hardinge HLV-H lathe English/metric gearbox
The oiler on the carriage has obviously been flooded with the incorrect coolant in the past causing some rust to form in the oil grooves under the carriage. This has caused some marking minor groves on the bed.
The carriage needs to be stripped to clean out all of the oil ways. I am considering getting the bed ground but am little confused about comments made on this topic in the past
why is shimming under the bed necessary after a reground
Is it for leadscrew nut and leadscrew
Is it the fact that the headstock is not sitting directly on the ground bed but the casting the bed is bolted to
If I am considering replacing the Teflon order the carriage can I make that thick by the amount ground off the bed
I have had several machines rebuilt (deckel fp2 etc) and ha Ve been taught hand scraping etc but I have not found any one in Melbourne that has rebuilt a Hardinge lathe
Any comments advise would be appreciated
Thanks
Ps have a near new schaublin and after using the Hardinge I have found this lathe much better in fact the lathe quality/ features make the schaublin a second rate lathe ( never thought I would admit to this prior to getting a Hardinge )
