Shiming gib (knee)

When I removed the gib on the knee, I notice there was a shim. No problem. Having looked at the shim I notice it has 2 holes for the oil to come though. Pardon my stupidity here but if the shim goes between the knee's taper dovetail and the gib why does it need oil since it moves as one unit ( I'm assuming it does). What can I do to get the shim and gib to stick together while reinstalling it?

This was when I pulled i out, it has not been cleaned.

Should I cut the shim so that it minks this?
