I've complained many times that moving the tail-stock on my Hardinge HLV-H causes pain in my right shoulder (one too many bike accidents!).
This is a simple hand-wheel gearbox I've knocked up over Christmas to , hopefully, solve the problem .
The carriage rack was extended by adding about a foot on rack from another Hardinge (HLV) . Inside the aluminium case are two 1module gears (60/24T) which drive a 28T Hardinge stub form gear (kindly donated to the cause by Mark Rand of this parish). This moves the tail-stock about 1-1/2" per turn which should be OK for light drilling/pecking.
I've added two brass gib screws to the rear of the tail-stock to keep the dovetail against the bed as it's moved.
Here's a youtube video of it working
