broken off reverse knob

I want to pull the feed reverse gear assy. out, I know how to get the handwheel clutch off with out losing the detent ball and the double grub screw, my question is, how hard is it going to be to get the shaft out so I can repair/replace it. I don't believe it will be as simple as just sliding it out the front without pulling the gear assy. behind it apart. Is it? if not what is the minimum I must remove to get it to slide out.
